Bryophyllum - A toxic weed for some and just a beautiful ornament flower for others.

The flower used as reference here was spotted with a backlit sun glowing into it’s fiery petals along a localcountry road… I pulled over and picked a few for my studio of course, which is where the idea grew that I really needed to paint it. Not only is this my biggest watercolour botanical to date - but it was a painting completed during my second pregnancy and one I am very proud of considering the small sporadic moments I was able to complete it.

Its name reflects its reproduction habits - the plant has an amazing ability to reproduce vegetatively in large numbers. Each plant produces small plantlets along the edges of its leaves which detach and form new plants. This makes mother of millions hard to eradicate when growing where it is not wanted!

Mother of millions also produces numerous seeds which can survive in the soil for a number of years before germinating. wow. Nature still does not cease to amaze me!

It has hung proudly at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden show in March 2024 - but is now ready to be discovered and given a forever home!
